One of Authouart's favorite pastimes is sitting on the streets of New York City and drawing. He views New York City as the cultural center of the world in the 20th century, much as Rome was in the time of Caesar.
With his tools packed, he sets out in the early morning seeking an image to draw. In addition to colored pencils, pens, brushes, etc... he carries prepared paper. Back in France, he has taken thick Arches paper and already collaged onto it, for example, movie ticket stubs, targets, old pictures from magazines or perhaps silhouettes. On top of this he applies paint so freely that is drips down the paper. The paper, thus prepared, is already a work of conceptual art before he begins his drawing.
On this paper, Authouart draws and paints New York City. He also makes sketches in his sketchbook and takes notes. Upon returning home, it all comes together to become his newest piece.
Manhattan I was made in Times Square around 46th and Broadway. Manhattan II is an extension of Manhattan I to the south.
