One summer, somewhere in a small village in the south of France, Authouart met Mr. C...
He has the white wavy hair of Georges Braque and the same roguish look. But Mr. C... is not an artist. His poetic world lies elsewhere. For more than 50 years he has bought, sold, maintained, dismantled and demolished thousands of cars. By profession, he watches the infernal game, which by virtue of human fate, takes cars from birth to nothingness. But often times Mr. C...'s spirit is moved by some princess of the roads of yesteryear. Not having the heart to junk her, he separates her from the less fortunate and parks her among dozens of others, in immense hangars, where she will begin a long dust covered sleep.
It is often said that on Sundays, Mr. C... goes to sit alone amongst all his "Sleeping Beauties". There he dreams of times when, new and shiny, they speedily chased the wind down roads bathed in sunshine. He sees again, in his memory, all those that spent their "lives" showing off their wheels and chrome and ... style.
In the summer of 1990, Mr. C... bestowed a great privilege on Authouart: He opened the doors of this marvelous world to him... There, for several days, Authouart drew. These numerous drawings inspired Authouart to paint German Garage II as well as Garages of Yesteryear. Garages of Yesteryear is a series of lithographs featuring classic automobiles, of eras past, in garages in five different countries.
